James Elmer Highlund, age 90, passed away peacefully at his residence on July 4, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born on June 15, 1930 in Detroit. After proudly serving in the United States Navy, he returned to Detroit and married Sharon Highlund. Together they raised five children, he worked for the City of Detroit for 33 years before retiring to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He was a devoted husband to the late Sharon; an awesome Dad to Pete, Trish, Paul (Lisa), James Jr Highlund and Penny (Ron) Neagos; a loving Pa and Grandpa to Brittany, Mandy, Melissa, Jorden, Jackson, Paul Jr, Matthew, Brandi, Monica, and the late Jacob; and he was blessed with 10 great grandchildren Jimi, Audrey, Jase, Rylee, Keagan, Paulie, Kollin, Ares, Bella and Svennin. In addition, he was a loyal son to the late Pere and Evelyn Highlund and faithful big brother to late Mary Lou Dietz. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and all of the kids he coached and mentored throughout the years. He loved life, lived it to the fullest, and above all, treasured all of those in his that made it a great life. Graveside services will be held at Moss Lake Cemetery in his beloved Upper Pennisula at a later date yet to be determined. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bagnasco & Calcaterra Funeral Home, St. Clair Shores.
